Rainbow Valley
by L.M. Montgomery
Although this book barely contained any references to Anne or Gilbert, other than in passing, I still enjoyed this story, which focused on the Meredith family, consisting of the town's presbyterian minister and his four children, who soon befriended the Blythe children. I enjoyed reading about the Meredith children. They were good natured and fun loving, yet always ending up in trouble with the judgmental townfolk, especially by town gossips from their father's church who felt that they should have been setting an example for the town. This book made me cry, towards the end.
I did notice the randomly inserted use of the n-word, which was extremely jarring and unsettling. It is really hard to reconcile enjoying an author while rejecting some of the opinions they held at the time of writing one of their stories.
