๐ป.๐พ: Grief, Loss, Trauma and Revenge
๐ญ Amanda and Wendy come up with the perfect plan. These two strangers were brought together by chance, both suffering enormous loss. They are broken and want justice for their loved ones. After meeting at a support group, they become fast friends. By sharing what brought each of them to the group, a plot begins to develop. Maybe there is potential for both to get their lives back on track. You won't believe just how far they are willing to go!
We also have Ruth. Ruth is home alone one Friday night while her husband Scott, is out with some friends. Somebody broke into Ruthโs home and brutally attacked her, stabbing her multiple times. All Ruth can remember is that her attacker had piercing blue eyes. Will Ruth ever feel safe again? And will the NYPD ever be able to find this attacker?
Farrow is our detective who has the desire to work the cold cases that no one else wants and was also the lead detective of both Amanda's and Ruth's cases. The lives of these women will interconnect in surprising ways with deadly consequences.
This is essentially a story about vigilantism and satisfying the burning need for revenge. Itโs also a kind of cautionary tale about the dangers of carrying out the revenge scenario that was long fantasized about. But as the plot unfolds, we discover itโs a story thatโs about far more than that.
Think Strangers on a Train on steroids. And the book Strangers on a Train gets frequent mentions throughout.
While the build-up was too slow, once it got going, I had a hard time putting it down but compared to his Eddie Flynn books, this one definitely doesn't start with a bang. Each POV chapter ended on a cliff that begged for one more chapter, the need to know what would come next! As with all thrillers, go in as blind as possible for the best experience!
The story contains multiple POVs between Amanda, Ruth, Farrow and also from Scott (Ruthโs husband). I enjoyed every voice and backstory that they shared. Each chapter and twist grew more intense as the story went on. The characters are not particularly likeable, but I was fine with that. I enjoyed Detective Farrow and his partner, Hernandez. They had a great working relationship and were good at their job.
Steve has to be one of the most devious, twisted and seriously ingenious writers out there. He has a talent for outrageous plots with believable characters who you find yourself rooting for. Although I guessed 80% of the twists which kind of dampened my experience hence only a 3.75 star rating but the last twist was memorable! A bit of a JOLT that gave me some chills as I stared at the last page! Oh, Mr. Blue Eyes I have questions for you!
Overall, If Steve Cavanagh is measured by Eddie Flynn, then he has failed here. The story is significantly darker, but I am not convinced that that is an asset. There is much more personal pain or perceived pain, and that has an impact on Cavanagh's style, too. While Eddie's charming wittiness makes those books fluent, the lack of a likeable funny character in Kill for Me, kill for You is a liability.
๐.๐ Steve Cavanagh is a mastermind when it comes to his legal thrillers, the Eddie Flynn series and I loved it and that was the reason I was waiting to read this book for so long!
