There's an author's note at the start of this about how Stuart wanted to make this book DARK and all her drafts got knocked back by her editor so she really had to sanitise it in the end. And you can see the potential is there (I say potential because I appreciate the darker HR stuff); without it this story just seems a bit... mid? It started well enough but Killoran wasn't enough of a dick and Emma was a bit passive imo even though her bravery was constantly praised. I have more or less instantly forgotten it if I'm honest.
