The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

5.0

This book is a bit of a beast at just over 500 pages, so this was a big undertaking for a slow reader but I got there. I’d already seen the 2009 movie (and it’s sequels) and I thought it/they were great but I know all too well that books get condensed when they are made into movies and so I wanted to read them too. I also want to read the sequels not written by Larsson (even though I’ve heard they’re not as good) and I thought a refresher was in order.

I love how the book has a duel story early on, and much like if you’ve ever seen Stranger Things, you know the only way the characters are going to get to the bottom of what is going on is if they work together. I also knew this from watching the movie, but that was almost 10 years ago so my memory of the films is starting to be rather sketchy.

The characters are well rounded and interesting and the story keeps you completely hooked. It’s rare that I’m so enthralled by a book that I feel excited to turn the page. There were several moments reading this where I had a real “YES!” moment, where I wanted to punch the air, but inevitably I was on a bus so I refrained.

I would recommend this for anyone who likes a good crime or thriller novel, or for someone who has never read anything in those genres who wants to try something different. It’s incredibly well written. Such a shame that Larsson passed before he saw the success of his work and before he could leave us more books. I will read the others in this series when I can find them... I recently moved and have no idea where they are!
