A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews
3.0
3.5*
Going into this book I was certain I was going to love it. A lot of people I follow and am friends with have rated this book really high, and also its avg. rating here on Goodreads is really high, so I had a lot of faith in it. Though I didn't love it, I still liked it. This isn't a bad book, it's actually a really strong debut, and I'm looking forward to reading more from C. G. Drews in the future. BUT it didn't blow me away.
This book does contain a lot of violence and abuse so TW if you're a sensitive reader. I liked how it was done. It was raw and it was vile, and I believe that in the moments where it felt a little too much, it was intentional to make the reader understand how obsession can make you do unspeakable things.
I liked the symbolism there was thrown in here and there, it gave the characters more depth and more importance to the story. With that said I did not like the romance in this book. I don't which part that made me dislike it; if it was the love interest herself or the presence of love, or the "goal" for the love story - I don't know. Maybe one, two, who knows maybe all three things; I can't say. Either way, it was the primary thing that made me lower my rating. August - the love interest - I didn't particularly like. I just didn't get her and her personality was just so onesided. We didn't get to see anything other the than happy, positive and overly excited person. Also, she just annoyed me a lot and some of the things she said just didn't sit well with me. With that said, I really enjoyed the ending. It was the best thing about this book. I adored the last 40 pages and I wish I had had that feeling the whole way through. I got all emotional, though it did not make me tear up.
All in all a good debut and I really recommend listening to classical music whilst you read the book. It puts you in the right atmosphere and it really adds a lot to the story! Here's the playlist I listened to: https://open.spotify.com/user/11133080760/playlist/31s02tBcGs33OyBZH61w9t?si=4yDHfD5tRLeEWThHOJb3DA
