Leave No Trace by Mindy Mejia
4.0

In Leave No Trace, a father and his 9-year old son venture into the wilderness in an area called the Boundary Waters, never to be seen again. Until 10 years later, when the son, Lucas Blackthorn, is discovered ransacking a shop and murders one of the shop-owners. He is sent to a psychiatric facility where he is violent and uncommunicative.

Maya Stark, assistant speech therapist, is assigned to his case to see if she can get him to talk. To her surprise she does, but he refuses to answer any questions about his father and where they've been all this time. But despite Lucas' violent episodes towards Maya and other staff, she finds herself forming a connection with him, a connection which could cross the professional line. But can Maya get Lucas to open up? Just what exactly has gone on in the 10 years since Lucas and his father disappeared? What secrets will be uncovered during the course of this book?

I loved Mindy Mejia's last book and I think I loved this book even more! The story drew me in instantly and it was just great. As much as I loved the story however, Maya annoyed me so much. Like I was rooting for her, but she kept doing things that didn't make sense. I lost count of the amount of times I internally screamed 'Maya, what are you doing? Don't do that, don't be stupid', but this girl just kept doing stupid things.

Another thing that didn't quite sit right with me was Maya's background. So we find out early on in the book Maya is a former patient, and then a while later we find out why. Spoiler:
SpoilerShe murdered a man when she was 15 because she believed she was about to be gang-raped, and her mother's cabin would be burgled
. So why
Spoilerdid she only serve 6 months in the facility, and why, 8 years later, is she allowed to work in said facility with no training or qualifications, and allowed to spend one-on-one time with violent offenders?? Yeah, obviously it was self-defence and she was deemed to be mentally unfit, but do they ship you out to the real world in 6 months after smashing a guy's head in?? And then your psychiatrist is like yeah, why don't you come work for me, no degrees needed. Is this realistic?

Despite this, I freaking loved this book and already need the next Mindy Mejia book in my hands!!
