Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop

4.0

I will straight up say that this trilogy has a lot of problems. I could go into detail and explain what the problems are, but I'm pretty sure dozens of other people have done that. In spite of that, I love these books. I don't know why, other than maybe I really enjoy reading about the characters Daemon, Saetan, Lucivar, and Surreal. They're interesting, and I would love to hear about some of their past adventures before their lives revolve around Jaenelle. Jaenelle is pretty interesting herself in this book, though, but other than that she's kind of an empty shell that everyone puts their view into. One could argue that's somewhat the point of the character Witch (dreams made flesh), but I don't even care. I read these books in high school, they got me through a serious illness, and I just read them when I want some escapism.

Though these are QUITE dark (violence and rape is in everyone's back story and I'm not exaggerating), it's a weird kind of escape. At the end, it's just an interesting world with interesting rules and I would NOT want to live there!
