So… book 3 of the Twisted series…
For anyone out there who reads my reviews, you might be wondering why I am actually reading this series at all, especially considering its problematic content. Two reasons: 1) literary FOMO - I heard so much about it from social media and YouTube that I just HAD to read it and see for myself what all the fuss was about. 2) I purchased the fairyloot editions with sprayed edges - don’t judge! - because they were really pretty with pastel colours and flowers… and they prove the adage ‘never judge a book by its cover’! Seriously? I really need to pay more attention to book titles - Twisted Hate kind of says it all.
Given the above, I don’t know why I’m surprised by the content of this third story but after the first two books of the series, I thought to myself that Huang has probably exhausted all the red flags on her previous two MMCs… As it turns out - not even a little bit! Hey, I like my smut just as much as the next woman and I thought Alex and Rhys were borderline toxic but, I officially declare that Josh is the most sexually twisted of the lot. Violent sex is one thing, the 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ spicy scenes that Huang writes in this book are a little too violent for my taste. Sorry, not sorry to all those who disagree. It’s a personal taste thing, not a judgement thing.
Having said that, the extreme nature of the spice aside, the story is actually good even the tropes are typical for a romance of this kind: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, hidden trauma and secrets… Huang also does character creation very well and the chemistry and banter were good enough to bring a smile to my face. Plus as you continue through the series, you never have to really let go of any of the characters so props for world building as well (even if the world of these characters are sometimes more far fetched than some fantasy realms). There are a few plot twists but nothing that I did not expect but - that’s enough; no spoilers…
Good enough to keep me reading (reasons 1 and 2 still apply even after 3 books). Full series review after I finish book 4.
