Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
by Lewis Carroll
The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth
I feel uncomfortable rating this three stars given the number of times I laughed aloud while reading it. I suppose the rating reflects the discomfort I felt about the author and his intended audience. Most of this enjoyed out on our porch with an annual cigar as the wind howled and the skies darkened. All the best lines have not made their way into an adaptation, all the best lines are for me. I read recently that while in Berlin Kierkegaard had his efforts at exploring the city curtailed by his frequent need to urinate, forcing him to head back to his flat. I found a timeless charm in that anecdote, one echoed perhaps in the decision to use a recitation about the Norman Conquest to attempt to dry off Alice and others after their time in the waters of Wonderland.
