Other reviewers seem to have read a different book, just based on their plot synopsis.
I picked this up on a whim at an old fashioned paperback trader a few years back. It was cheap and from the golden age of paperback horror that Paperbacks From Hell tried to revive, so I figured why not. Its languished on the shelf until now, and quite frankly I wasn't expecting much from it.
It ended up being a thriller more than a 'horror' novel per se, but was surprisingly engaging and moved quickly. There are of course some vagaries of language, characterizations, and opinions we might find more objectionable these days, but as I frequently say, take those in the context of when its written and the prevailing social norms.
It reminds me, in the best way, of those lifetime movie thrillers, crossing over into the sort of medical thriller that Dr. Giggles might remind people of.
The, let's call it a twist, mystery, or big reveal is pretty obvious early on, but this isn't a mystery novel. The characters (mostly two sisters, a couple of rich young men, their wealthy families, and a couple of doctors) are all believable in context. And if the events seem a bit implausible or far-fetched, well, we're here for a thriller after all. Definitely worth a quick read if you find a copy.
