Lulu Anew by Etienne Davodeau

3.0

I enjoyed this - it's definitely a different sort of graphic novel. Lulu, a housewife, becomes despondent after her first job interview in several years and goes walkabout. She leaves her three children and her very unlikeable husband behind for a few weeks to escape, and we are told her story through the lens of her friends and family, some of whom have taken it upon themselves to spy on her during this little walkabout. It's a very different story, and the characters encountered along the way present unique perspectives on Lulu and her experiences.

The characters are wonderfully drawn, and it's interesting to see people rendered in a way that doesn't aim to make them especially attractive -- instead, they look like real people you might encounter on the street. I'm definitely going to be thinking about it for a while.
