Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Book Rating: 10/10 OMG! This book was excellent. Tracy deserves all the accolades for this complex and intricate world she has built. I love the magic system in this world. It's so fascinating, and quite honestly, I could have an entire book dedicated to it. Tracy’s inspirations for the magic system is quite an interesting one. The characters are all great. You will love some of them, hate some of them, and by the end of the book, your status with some of the characters will be complicated. You will feel a wide range of emotions from this book as this book is an emotional rollercoaster. I should mention trigger warnings for the death of a parent, generational trauma such as depictions of slavery, abuse, and rape. There are depictions of racism and microaggressions as well.

The plot twist I didn't see coming. I thought the book would go in one direction, and it threw me a curveball and went in an unexpected but welcome direction. I just couldn't put this one down, although, at times, I sadly had to for work. But if I were younger with fewer responsibilities, I could have easily read this in one sitting. I miss those days. But I digress. I can't believe this is a debut novel. Tracy is knocking it out of the park with this one; imagine what she's doing in ten or twenty years with more experience with her craft. I can see great things for Tracy going, forward and in my humble opinion, she will be considered one of the greatest writers of our time.
