The Inmate by Freida McFadden
4.0
dark mysterious tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No

The fact that I finished this book in under 36 hours says it all, really.

McFadden delves into Brooke's trauma, guilt and heartache over the last ten years, making the audience empathise for her. Told from a first person perspective, the novel gives just enough information that the reader thinks they have a clue as to what is going on, when in reality they don't. The reader experiences the same confusion and agony as Brooke in trying to know whether the right person really was put away, or if she has condemned an innocent man. I found myself quite conflicted between the two men, the classic 'bad boy' and 'boy-next-door', which shows how McFadden effectively created and conveyed real, loveable characters.

I do love when a thriller has a plot twist that I didn't see coming, and this book was no exception. It really had me fooled the entire time. Even when the real plot crossed my mind halfway through the book, I disregarded it because I couldn't see how it would work...but McFadden made it work 😁.
