The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
by Tom Wolfe
Meh. I think if I read this in high school it would have blown my mind because I was into the beatnik authors back then. But I still think the beatniks were better.
This book really lacks substance, and I’m struggling through the last hundred pages. It’s a bit too long for what it is. Through the repetitive trip depictions, I am finding enjoyment in the historic context. It is interesting to learn how LSD became so popular and that it was not illegal for a while. I also have enjoyed learning about Kesey and how the east coast and west coast psychedelic movements differed. That being said, I would much rather read a nonfiction account with less of a stylized approach. It feels kind of juvenile.
