The Female Man by Joanna Russ

challenging medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
My main issues with this book are more its structure than its conceits. A lot of criticisms say that the book is out of date, which to some degree it is, but it's not fair to use contemporary politics to judge the social dynamics of the 1960's. Jael was introduced too late into the story, which is a shame, because she is a fascinating character that ultimately ties all four women together. She could've made the story more compelling. The humor in this novel is sharp, and is the novel's greatest strength.
