Incredible novel. Both emotionally powerful and informative. There will be many moments where you stop to think how you would have reacted to the challenges faced by these women. A coming of age story that allows you to do the same no matter how old you are. You’ll find yourself as angry, hopeful, sad, resilient, and confused as the main character. You will find yourself trying to parse out your beliefs about yourself and others. You’ll be rooting for the characters: cheering and protesting for civil rights and women’s rights. The highs are quite high but the lows are quite low. Based on true stories, Hannah is an artist with her imagery: making you feel like you are inside the story rather than reading one. You want these women to be recognized for their bravery and heroism but unfortunately that isn’t what happened in real life. If you’re tittering on whether to read this book, trust me, you 100% should. I can count on my hand the number of books I’ve given perfect 5/5 scores and The Women is one of them. You will gain many things by reading this multilayered novel, but if you don’t, I can guarantee you will have gained at least one thing: understanding. This novel ties the many cultural movements at the time into a neat bow. You will come away changed, for the better. Not to mention, the twists and turns of the novel will keep you turning pages. There is never a dull moment.
