Howards End by E.M. Forster

I read this one because the reviews of Zadie Smith's ON BEAUTY said she'd written an homage to this one. Yes, there are plot parallels...yes, there are similar themes of classism and intolerance. This one has none of the sly humor that Smith included....the internal lives of the sisters was clever, but there wasn't a character I could hang my heart on....and some I truly detested.

Lots of commentary about the way men and women see the world.

I was reminded of HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG-humans struggle over a snatch of land and a hollow house. And the house outlives all the scheming people.
