There's Someone Inside Your House
by Stephanie Perkins
This is the kind of book I was desperate for as a kid, but I'm an Old Lady and the only mystery/horror/suspense novels that were published for teens back in my day were Nancy Drew. So once I outgrew Nancy, I took myself to the adult section of the library and that's where I stayed. This book basically reads like a teen slasher movie (think Scream) in book format. The killer breaks into houses and toys with the victims beforehand by moving stuff around. Who knew an egg timer could be sinister? Unfortunately it loses steam about halfway through when we find out who the killer is and the ending is SUPER rushed. More people die, there's fallout for the heroine and the town and it just ends.
Also, having grown up in a town about the size of the town depicted in the book - it's just not believable that you don't know all of the kids you go to school with. The author tap-dances around this by making the heroine a newcomer - but trust me. Even if you don't hang out with "those kids", you at least have classes with them. I didn't hang out with the Stoners or the Popular Crowd but I knew broad strokes about them, like what kind of student they were, if they were in any clubs, and who their friends were.
This was OK, but man - it could have been great. So kind of a disappointment.
