Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

3.0

This book has a heavy topic of abuse. The main character, Kambili, is not independent and barely speaks up for herself. When her father beats her or pours boiling water on her, she doesn't do anything about it. It is frustrating and gripping, because the reader is anxious to see what will come of Kambili, but wants her to take a stand. Aid hie does a nice job of keeping the reader interested and adds character to Kambili towards the end of the book. The undertone of romance lightened the mood a bit, a stark contrast to that of abuse. It is a nice feature.
The ending of Purple Hibiscus was very satisfying, yet shocking. I will not say what happens, but I will say that nothing will prepare you for it. It ties the book up nicely. I think Adichie made one of he best endings ever in this book.
