The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

5.0

So, this book is FAR more brutal than I was expecting.

Like, I knew it was about war, but I’ve read fictional books about war that are quite sanitized. Not this one. From the first chapter, it’s raw and real and holds no punches.

And that’s what took me from a four star to a five star.

Rin is a flawed protagonist and I like that she isn’t always right. I like how she’s struggled and fought and that’s made her who she is. I also like how each thing that happens to her changes who she is. Given the gravity of the situation, it’s quite realistic.

R. F. Kuang draws inspiration from VERY REAL AND BRUTAL things that happened in the Pacific Theatre during World War 2. If you would not read a history book about those horrors, stay away from this.

Am I glad I read it? Absolutely. But I know how to compartmentalize the atrocities I know happened and my every day life, but not everyone does.

But it was fantastic and I’ll absolutely be continuing the series
