Pretties
by Scott Westerfeld
Tally Youngblood lives in a future where everyone undergoes an intensive surgery on their sixteenth birthday to correct their biological deficiencies - their eyesight is corrected, their teeth are replaced with some crazy indestructible ceramic, their immune system is altered to make them impervious to disease and weakness, and, most importantly, they are made pretty. But, as Tally goes on to discover, those improvements aren't the only changes that take place when sixteen-year-olds go under the knife.
The world that Westerfield creates is initially offputting but grows more interesting and complex as the series continues. At first glance, "Uglies" looks like it will be a touching adventure story about a girl who believes more in "inner beauty" than outer beauty. In reality, it's anything but. The series explores the vain and destructive nature of humanity, the power and mystery of the human brain, and free will and chaos versus institutional control for the greater good.
