The Pomegranate Gate
by Ariel Kaplan
As the Inquisition sweeps through the world as they know it, Toba flees through a gate under moonlight, and Naftaly leaves home forever, guarding a sacred book with his life. Both their paths will take them into a world that mirrors their own, but is older, magical, and where they may find what they've spent her young lives in search of.
I went into this book not knowing what to expect, and I throughly enjoyed the adventure. Kaplan spins a world of magic and political tension that is both fantastical, and with enough parallels to history to feel real. The magic and world the Maziks is introduced with a light touch that does not overwhelm the story. The book's strength is in plot and world-building. Naftaly and Barsilay are the characters which stole my heart, and I'm looking forward to more of their stories in the next book. Thanks for the arc!
