A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

2.0

I have enjoyed Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson series, but this particular book leaned too hard on the "wacky hijinks and shenanigans". With the weighty subject matter (previous trauma, murder, kidnapped child, rape), the offbeat bantering and ridiculously unprofessional behavior of the brand new sheriff just set the wrong tone. It's as if Jones couldn't decide if she wanted a funny book or a serious one, and created an unfortunate mashup that tried to combine both and succeeded at neither. Sunshine was simply obnoxious. And any professional who said the kinds of things she regularly says to her underlings and other law enforcement officers would be at the end of a sexual harassment lawsuit so fast their head would spin.
