A History of What Comes Next
by Sylvain Neuvel
The idea of this story is so cool. 100 identical generations of women fighting to get the people of Earth into space to save them from an impending future disaster. It's told as a sort of alternate history that frames much of the space race around these women and their desire to see progress before the next generation takes over. And also there's another group, men this time, fighting to stop them. What a cool premise.
Unfortunately, the execution leaves something to be desired. The story drops you almost immediately into the action with very little time to get used to the writing style or get to know the characters on any kind of deep level. And speaking of the writing style, it definitely was not my favorite. It didn't read like your typical narrative structure but rather the characters just sort of narrating what was happening around them in short sentences that I guess are meant to feel like you as the reader are also in the middle of the action. Though we mainly follow the 99th generation of mother/daughter, we also get some flashback sequences to previous generations. And those I did appreciate because they were written in a more typical writing style that actually provided some context for the purpose behind these characters and their mission.
Overall, I didn't really think this was bad. I just wish I had connected to the story a little more. When I first added it to my TBR, I didn't realize it was a series. Now that the entire trilogy is out and I've started it, I'm not sure if I'm going to continue on. I may check out some basic, non-spoiler reviews for the rest of the books and get a feel for people liking or disliking where the series goes. Then I'll decide. I also am not sure if I'm interested in checking out this author's other series, which has always been kind of high on my TBR.
