Base Notes
by Lara Elena Donnelly
I loved this because I love Lara Elena Donnelly’s writing. She has such a gift for writing the vivid, flavourful, vibrant aspects of life - sights, sounds and smells are all so real. And, on general, she writes fantastically complicated characters. However, and perhaps this is my own comparing too much to the Amberlough series, but I did not care for or feel the pathos as much in Base Notes. The perfume notes at the start of each chapter was a nice touch, but I struggled with this novel because I felt that I knew what was going to happen from the start. And, even then, I still felt the ending a little confusing. Still, I enjoyed this and there was lots to like about the novel. And I will definitely read whatever comes next for the author.
