Okay... so, I’ve had this book since I was a very young child of about maybe 6 or 7 (so about half of my life) and I have only just got around to reading it, and let me tell you, give it a miss.
This book is highly sexist in so many ways and I was not expecting that from the blurb at all. One fine example being
‘oh tell me Mr.Hoppy. I’ll be your slave for life’. When he heard the words your slave for life, a little shiver of excitement swept through Mr. Hoppy.
End quote.
And I understand that this was written in a different time, however I do not think that a children’s book should be teaching children that it’s okay to view people that you feel affection towards as ‘your slave’.
My other issue was the fact that Mr. Hoppy built their relationship entirely on lies and took Mrs. Silver’s beloved pet that she’d loved for many years, and just gave it to a pet shop. AND HE NEVER TELLS HER. It’s not okay to teach kids to build relationships based on deceit.
