Somehow I forgot to write a review for this in May. *gasp* I’m not sure how that happened exactly. So I wondered who might have missed this beauty on release day. The Maiden Lane series is one of my absolute favorite historical romance series. I’ve been looking forward to Trevillion and Phoebe since I found out there would be a Trevillion and Phoebe.
Ms. Phoebe Batten is intelligent, charming and almost completely blind. She feels stifled under her brother’s worry and restrictions. Phoebe wasn’t born blind, but has gradually lost her sight over the years and her freedom with it. Her brother means well, she knows this, but nonetheless she can’t help but feel resentment toward him and the man who he has placed as her guard.
After a terrible injury to his leg, James Trevillion walks with a cane, but is still more than capable of protecting Phoebe.
When the story opens (truly, this is one of the best first chapters ever) Phoebe and James are set upon by ruffians and it soon becomes apparent someone is on a quest to kidnap her. For what purpose I won’t say, but it does spur James to spirit her away so that he can protect her . That’s when you will fall in love with them as a couple.
James begins to see past her blindness to the woman at her core and Phoebe grows and begins to experience life’s wonders again with his help. I loved this couple together.
Such a sweet, satisfying romance. I very much enjoyed.

He might be a cripple on land but by God in the saddle he was a demon.

“I don’t want you hurt,” he said gruffly.
“I know.” Her smile was winsome. “But falling isn’t the end of the world. I may fall, it’s true–in fact, I probably will fall– but really, once can’t live without falling now and again.”
Such a sweet, satisfying romance. I very much enjoyed.
