Set on You by Amy Lea

Upon first reading the blurb of this novel, I knew that I wanted to devour its contents. It just sounded like one of those great romantic comedies from the late 90s/early 2000s, only with a modern twist. Fortunately, this is exactly what it was.

This debut novel contains great references to the pop culture of today. The characterization is clear and sufficiently rounded. Its scenes all seem appropriately placed and paced and chosen. Dialogue vs. narration is well balanced and varied from thoughts to spoken conversations to text messages and blog comments. This variety makes it interesting and read rather quickly. I must say, however, that the amount of "steam" that this books contains is a little too gratuitous to my liking. It could stand to lose one or two sex scenes, or at least their explicitness. That being said, it does explore some interesting topics beyond sex, love and romance: self-concept, beauty standards, social media, social constructs, mental health, family, friendship, bi-racial identity, grief, and so much more...!

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, lighthearted romantic comedy, who enjoys sarcastic wit, the enemies-to-lovers trope, and social media.
