The book cover says "First He Takes You Then He Breaks You" and indeed the breaking part was high in this book.

๐Ÿ’ญ This is probably one of my most anticipated books of 2024 and it certainly didnโ€™t disappoint. It's always a pleasure to read Chris's book and just like his other books, I enjoyed The Death Watcher. It's the thirteenth book in the series!
Carter is back after a long wait and brings us a new case for Hunter and Garcia. As always, he brings with him a particularly brutal and perfidious series of murders that take place right under the noses of our two investigators.
Hunter and Garcia come across a dead man who, at first glance, appears to have been the victim of an accident. However, upon closer inspection, inconsistencies become apparent and it quickly becomes clear that this is a covered-up murder. When a second body turns up, to which the "death before death" also applies, it is clear that a serial killer must be at work here and the question arises as to how long he has been operating.
But how can you track down such a โ€œghostโ€ murderer who left nothing behind?
The nasty thing about it is that it is based on a true story. That is what I had in mind when I was reading and I keep asking myself how what the author is telling me can be true.

This book is a fantastically written addictive and thrilling read that sinks its hooks into your mind from the very beginning. Carter's writing is as always addictive and the short chapter which always ends with a typical Carter-like cliffhanger which makes us read a book in less than one or two days irrespective of the length of the book(In this case, the length was short). He has a way of hooking me right from the start of the book and leaves me scrambling looking for answers through the story but as usual, I did not manage to catch the killer before it was revealed on page. They start with minimal clues and this time the thriller has less action but is no less exciting.
Let me warn you this book has a slower pace as compared to the other books in this series but it will gain momentum after halfway of the book. So sit tight!

IMO, each book from 1-12 is more violent and gruesome. Book 13 however, is quite different to the others. There are certainly some dark, emotional themes running through, which adds another layer to the overall story. Whilst the violence and gore level has definitely been reduced considerably, this time itโ€™s far more visceral and emotional. Yes, there were torture scenes and graphic explanations of injuries, but the killer wasn't really as sadistic as usual, which made them even more cunning, dangerous and illusive because the reality of his killings was that they were well and truly invisible. The twisted and calculated mind of this killer is utterly astounding. The only way Robert ended up solving the case was because of sheer luck, something very unusual for him.

We experience the story from different perspectives, including that of the perpetrator and his victims. The perpetrator himself also gives you something to think about and the showdown has one or two surprises in store.
I liked how Carter shaped the characters and their backstory. Carter cleverly managed to breathe life into the victims by telling their stories. There are some interesting supporting characters in this book on the side of the investigators. A promising forensic student and a policeman with heart, brains and a bad past, in keeping with the book's theme.
I also found the insight into the study of forensic pathology particularly interesting in this part, although the student was at times too self-confident for me.
I missed Hunter's and Garcia's personal life though!

Overall, a cracking thriller/police procedural and I hope all those diehard fans enjoy this as much as I did.
I can hardly wait to solve the 14th case together with Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia!
