I could read about Locke forever.
Wonderfully clever schemes and banter, surprisingly profound lines. Locke and Jean's friendship is my favourite thing in the world. Even the side characters were great. I was doubtful about the pirate stuff at first, but it was a lot of fun and made for a unique setting for politics and danger.
The way that fantasy is incorporated in this series is so subtle but effective. The touch of magic isn't out of place or ever used for plot convenience. It never intrudes on the story, but still plays an important part in it (less so in this book actually). The tropes that are used are given just enough unique flavour and so well incorporated into the context of the story that I don't find it cheap (eg. the epilogue with Locke and Jean and one potion). There were some moments that I felt were obviously just to allow a sequel, but I'm ok with that because I want the sequel. I definitely still like the first book more (I'm not so eager to reread this one), but this deserves all 5 stars I am giving it.
