Demon Copperhead
by Barbara Kingsolver
WOW. This one earned the Pulitzer.
A heartbreaking novel following the first 20-ish year of a boy's life in rural Appalachia.
Born to a single mother, surrounded by addiction, growing up in the foster care system, facing continuous setbacks and unimagineable hardship, Demon managed to hold on to his humanity and morality. It is filled with larger-than-life characters that jump off the page, this was 550 pages of incredible writing and I would have happily read 550 more. This novel ripped my heart out and put it back together more times than I could count - a nuanced, first person look at poverty and family and addiction and suffering and perserverance. My top book of 2023, hands down.
