White Nights
by Ann Cleeves
Engaging characters (both the women and the men, which is unusual in this genre: it’s usually one or the other). Very clear sense of place. The resolution to the mystery made sense, but I could sympathize with the “soothermoother” cop (Shetland slang for an off-islander): it was going to be hard to figure this one out if you didn’t have a sense of who all these people were years before, when they were young, and only Detective Jimmy Perez had that.
