This book follows Aila, the head phoenix keeper at a world renowned zoo whose phoenix breeding program as been defunct for years. However, after a tragic heist at a nearby zoo, must prove that her own derelict facilities are up to the task of helping save the critically endangered birds she's dedicated her whole life to. I really enjoyed this book. It is very reminiscent of TJ Klune's books and I would recommend it to fans of his.

I loved all the characters, particularly Aila, whose arc over the course of the story I really enjoyed, and I found her to be very easy to root for. Despite minimal world building, this story feels very lived in, and I could picture everything vividly. I particularly loved learning about all the different magical creatures. I also really enjoyed the romance subplot, though it only really starts to come into play around the 50% mark of the book, despite what the synopsis led me to believe.
This was an excellent cosy fantasy and one I would highly recommend!
