Frankenstein in Baghdad
by Ahmed Saadawi
I didn’t expect to love this novel as much as I do. From the very start, where the novel opens with a government report on a mysterious elusive criminal, I was hooked. The narration (with enormous kudos to the translator!) is vivid and rich, unfolding the story with each character’s perspective like different parts of the Whatsitsname’s body. The tension of motivation and morality, identity and purpose, justice and revenge runs through the novel, with many wonderful passages that truly make you question what you “want” from the novel, testing your sympathies and playing with who our antagonist truly is. It is excellent. An instant new favourite for me, and I can’t wait to te-read it again one day.
