Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

4.0

I don't find anything special about the story itself. It's a typical YA novel.

What is good is the writing style. The main character is very generic, but he is a fun voice to read the story through; very witty and charming.
But there were so many characters with so many interesting powers and traits that could have been delved into more, and it focused only on a select few, and even then mostly only on two of them.

What makes the book a 4 star for me is the entertainment value and the world the author has built. Some of the powers thought up for the children are very interesting, and while there is a youthfulness to the story there is also some solid content for nightmare fuel.
I also liked the use of old photographs to add a visual element to the story. The fact that the photographs were not taken specifically for the book, and are actually old photos, is pretty neat, and I can appreciate a level of artistry in doing this.

I was entertained the entire time, but I didn't feel there was anything special about the book to make me want to read the other books in the series.
