The Confession by Jessie Burton

5.0

I loved this book! The only negatives are that it took me a little while to get into and there were a few moments in the plot when I had to suspend disbelief - it is fiction after all (but seriously, why are jobs so easy to get in books?). But once I was into it, I was gripped. There are two storylines, one set in the present and the other in the early 80s. Present-day Rose wants to find out more about the mother who abandoned her when she was a baby, and the 80s storyline follows the mother in question. The Confession is one of those books where the plot carries the ideas/themes that are what make it so enjoyable, and here we examine (amongst other things) motherhood, ageing, "firey" relationships vs "settling", how to find what you truly want from life (if such a thing is possible), social media (I loved the rant on Rose's insta-mum friend using everyone around her in the work as an influencer) and LGBTQ relationships (in the 80s particularly).
