Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious
by Ross Douthat
It's hard to write a book like this, because ideally every religious-curious person needs a custom argument to have any chance of being convinced, and I doubt that Douthat did extensive research to figure out what arguments would be most effective.
But, he does have a good sense of the zeitgeist, and this book is put together well. Personally, I found the first half, arguments about the nature of the universe and human beings and how they might suggest that the universe is (1) consciously created and (2) human beings are at the center of it.
Then it goes off on a whole thing where he believes most people's spiritual visions, and that's fun to read because it's bonkers but still intelligently written.
Anyways, this book was not quite essential reading or eye-opening as I'd expected it to be, but I'm glad it exists. I do kind of wish there was a bit more about the nature/appeal of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
