Bird, Fitch, and Cash are all siblings with very different personalities, but they all share the desire to find out who they are. My daughter said she identified with Bird a lot, which I could see as I kind of did too. She was the quiet reader and scientist of the family who felt like she was the most awkward and overlooked person in the room. The nostalgia of growing up in the 80's hit home for me as well. It is a beautifully crafted book, though it's tone is quite serious, especially with the discomfort of the parents' treatment of each other as well as of their kids.
