The magic system was cool and I did like the portions with the competition scenes but I just didn't gel with the rest of the story. Hints of sapphic vibes but nothing confirmed for sure. I don't think I liked it enough to read the sequel but if you like YA fantasy romance (historical, diverse, mystery sub-plot), this is definitely that.
