Three Cups of Deceit: How Greg Mortenson, Humanitarian Hero, Lost His Way by Jon Krakauer

5.0

I'll never be able to read a "memoir" without doubting the true story again. As a journalist, I can't believe some of the discrepancies in Three Cups of Tea weren't noticed earlier. For example, Greg Mortensen claimed to have prayed with Mother Teresa's corpse ... three years after she died. It seems unreal a ghostwriter and/or editor wouldn't have caught that, but I also realize book publishing is different than journalism. I still think Mortensen did some great things in the Middle East, but now it's all overshadowed by his ridiculous exaggerations and outright lies. And his motives truly disgust me. I didn't know the proceeds of his books went straight to him, though CAI pays for all his travel, lodging, marketing and other promotional costs for his book tours. Gahhh!!! You just have to read the book. I can't even list all the things that angered me in this review. It's only 77 pages and WELL worth the read, especially for anyone who has been "inspired" by Three Cups of Tea or Stones into Schools in the past. I hope CAI is able to bounce back and continue to do great things for the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan, WITHOUT Greg at the helm.
