MARTians by Blythe Woolston
3.0
What a weird little book. Zoe graduates high school a year early (because public schools are being shut down to cut costs), and bring at the top of her class, she had offers right away from rival big-box retailers. She chooses AllMART, but that's hardly the biggest change in her life: her mom moved out (to. ... somewhere?), leaving Zoe in the house until foreclosure comes through. A former neighbor finds her, though, and brings her into his tiny community, set up in an abandoned shopping mall.
I enjoyed the book, though it felt like a lot of setting, a lot of setup, without ever getting to the payoff of a plot. Or, when it did, it happened suddenly, or if nowhere.
An easy dystopia but one that left me wanting much more.
