Review of This Hollow Heart by Evelyn Shine

I never knew how much I wanted to read a reimagining of the tales I grew up with, until I heard Evelyn's villain in this anthology is Koschei. And I wasn't disappointed. In fact, it has made me giddy.

My favourite bit, aside from the wonderfully crafted tension between Koschei and Inessa (seriously, the vibes were the same as the hand scene from Pride and Prejudice) was Inessa's remark that she found amusement in the 'general shenanigans he did to pass the time'. It was honestly the most accurate description of Slavic fairytale villains.

Something in our culture dictates that if you live for more than 80 years you immediately start doing weird shit to pass the time. Immortal wizard with immense power? Send every bogatyr on a mission to find a needle inside an egg, inside a duck... Sir? I know you've had decades to think of the most weird shit you could, but have some decency.

Plus, as of a few years back he's officially a Disney villain!
