The Ladies of Grace Adieu, and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke

3.0

When a book is written to be read as a book, I don't rate it based on how well it was adapted to an audiobook. Just because I didn't enjoy it in my chosen format doesn't mean it's a bad book. That is true of this rating - the stories were good but unexceptional, a fun addition to the world of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

That being said... the edition I read had one of the worst track lists I've ever seen in an audiobook. The track would end in the middle of a story or a short story would get tacked onto the same track as a longer story, which made it very hard to judge if I had time to read a story or not. The stories vary widely in length, so I didn't even have past experience to go off of. There were also weirdly long pauses in the middle of stories, but then no pause where there's clearly meant to be a break in the writing. So while I think this was a good book, I didn't actually enjoy reading it as much as I could have because it was impossible to tell what was coming. If you want to read this, I wouldn't advise an audiobook.
