The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons
4.0

Good use of alternate story lines but the cast list and the switching of viewpoints left me behind at times; the narrative arc is a little crowded. Kihrin doesn't behave like a 15 year old boy either. There are hints that he has lived many lives but the whole business of being Returned I found a bit like a Get Out Of Jail Free card, too easily deployed for key characters. Kihrin (is he actually a Kirin?) hobnobs with wizards, kings and gods rather too easily.
Over the course of ~700 pages it rips along, never pausing for self reflection and is quite enjoyable, in the same way that a roller coaster is enjoyable. I could put it down and pick it up without really needing to retain much of the prior story. I did find it a little hard to finish and started to check page numbers which is a bad sign for me.
I don't think I'll be checking in for the sequel(s)
