Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore

4.0

I enjoyed this. Each direction you chose explained different aspects of the story as a framing device and complimented each other without too much repetition: the art theft mystery, the spy thriller, the horror tale, the science fiction adventure, and the fantasy. The romance subplot between two characters is fun in each genre. Although it was the final tale, I followed the dog Jasper first, before following any of the other characters/stories, and that influenced my perceptions in all the other endings.

While this book isn't quite a true Choose Your Own Adventure, it's fun to see where the consequences of one simple choice lead you. Will you follow the housekeeper, Mrs. Vanders (for "The Missing Masterpiece")? Will you pick the little girl ("Lies Without Borders"), Kiran ("In Which Someone Loses a Soul and Charlotte Finds One"), Ravi ("Jane, Unlimited"), or Jasper ("The Strayhound, The Girl and The Painting")?

(The latter even has the same cadence as The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Cute, Cashore.)
