On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
For me, On the Come Up was not nearly as good as The Hate U Give. The main character, Bri, wasn't super likable. She treated her friends and her mom terribly, which took away from the book. I couldn't really get into this book to the point where I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what happened next. The end was a little to perfect and wrapped up nice for me as well.
I understand the themes that this book was trying to get across regarding how black people are looked at differently and when white people have guns its ok, but when black people have them, it's something to be feared. These were all relevant, but the book just fell short to me, especially compared to THUG.
