Insatiable by Meg Cabot
3.0

This is one of the few Meg Cabot adult or YA novels I haven't read, and my expectations were super low because I'd heard baaaad things. But, you know what, I thought this was a lot of fun.

The main issue with this book imo is how freaking chonky it is. 450 pages is excessive for a parody of vampire novels. Parodies shouldn't pass 350 as a general rule. And I mean this is 450 outsize hardback pages, so, for real, massively chonky.

Aside from that though, I was rather impressed by the creativity of the world building and the way the Cabot played with the common tropes. She had some variations on vampire lore that I've not seen before, and everything was consistently tongue-in-cheek in a way that I enjoy. Meena's power is also really cool, though I'm wondering if there will be further world building around powers like hers, since currently she's just special with a possible Joan of Arc connection.

The romances, admittedly, are awful, but I think they're meant to be? The love triangle is riDONKulous for sure. But, I mean, since this is supposed to poke fun at Twilight, that seems on point. I do like that, though it doesn't seem so at first, the vampires are actually kinda scary and that Lucien doesn't end up being a fluffy Edward type. It's a bit more complicated than it seems on the surface, and it does seem to really be wrestling with the fact that he appears to have the ability to somewhat control her mind.

Not sure whether I'll ever reread this, because I think that will depend on my opinion of the sequel, but this was fun, if a bit overlong.
