An Absolutely Remarkable Thing
by Hank Green
DID NOT FINISH: 38%
I really wanted to like this book because I have a lot of respect for Hank and all he does as a social figure.
I think the biggest reason I couldn't enjoy this book is voice. April is a very unrelatable character for me personally, and it's difficult to enjoy reading the perspective of a person I would probably hate in real life. That's not a critique of the book so much as an explanation for my lack of interest.
The story is also very surface level 'woke,' (Oh my word, I must be getting old if I'm criticising books for being too woke.) but that political correctness falls flat and just becomes annoying when addressed with so much off hand matter of factness but no depth. Perhaps I'm just being a snob or maybe I stopped too soon to experience the full value this book has to offer, but as much as I wanted to love it I just couldn't sum up any interest.
