I reread this to see whether I'd still give it 5 stars, answer is no. It's funny and moving and I had a little cry at the end, but it just reeks a bit too much of white saviourism and all of the characters are caricatures. What irked me the most is that the maid's pov chapters are narrated in a 'black accent', but the white pov isn't narrated in a white southern accent. Because obviously white southerners don't have accents. ???
