First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen

3.0

Sarah Addison Allen calls her writing Southern-fried magic realism and I agree. Of course, I've never travelled down south in North Carolina but given she was born and raised in the State I'd say she knows that of which she speaks. As for the magical realism, bring it on!

Both this story and the previous one I read, Other Birds, have an air of magic to them coupled with an air of believability. Perhaps magic is just believing in yourself…

I enjoyed this tale of the two Waverly sisters Claire and Sydney, their daughters Bay and Mariah, and their extended family, husbands included. As with Other Birds, this was a story of finding oneself, of friendship and love, and the strength of family ties. Since I am one who wonders if trees can sense humans, I took special delight in the apple tree in Clarie's backyard.
